Grooming for guys really is a minefield. On the one hand you have metrosexual guys with spray tans, threaded brows and a regular dose of botox, and on the other you have those who use a bar of soap and a can of deodorant and not much else. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle, but it can be a tricky one. If you want to look neat, sharp and fresh without looking overdone what exactly do you need to do each day? Here are some tips to help you get it right.
The good news is that beards are ‘in’. Even if formal environments it’s fine to have a beard these days, so great news if you’ve always hated clean shaving. However it doesn’t mean you should simply grow and go, if you’re going to have facial hair, it needs to be kept in check. A trim or a once over with a beard trimmer will help to keep everything neat and tidy. No more five o clock shadow, shaving rash or cuts to contend with- bonus! Keeping your eyebrows tame is another thing to keep into consideration. Some guys will be able to get away with doing nothing here, but if you’re very dark haired or a hairy kind of guy, it’s worth just pulling out the middle ones with tweezers. You don’t have to start messing around with the shape (unless you want to- but be careful!) but at least get rid of the monobrow because it’s never going to be a great look. Finally, dreaded nose and ear hair. This is something you’ll probably notice more as you get older but keep an eye on it. A nose hair trimmer will quickly and painlessly get rid of any embarrassing strays!
The average woman might have more skin care products than a beauty salon, but most guys tend to keep it more simple. You don’t need a complicated routine or loads of different things to keep your skin at it’s best. A quick moisturize after a shower is enough to prevent it from feeling dry and tight and also prevents it from aging. Even if you’re not too precious about your appearance, no one wants to look older than they are so for the sake of thirty seconds rubbing product into your face it’s worth it. Every once in a while it’s worth having a professional treatment too, a male facial, for example, is tailored for men’s skin. Perfect if you have a special occasion coming up and want to look your best, or just want to treat yourself and relax at the same time.
If you don’t want to devote a large chunk of your time to sitting in the barber’s chair, choose an easy to maintain style. Something that still looks ok even when it grows out slightly and is quick and easy for the barber to do. If you want something very low maintenance, buy a set of clippers and shave it off yourself whenever it needs doing. Since most men have some degree of hair loss by age thirty-five, if you’ve not updated your hairstyle in a while now could be the time to do so. Hanging on to longer hair when you have visible balding or thinning is likely to age you more. Embrace the change and go with something new which suits you better.
