Get Smartphone Savvy While Overseas

August 2, 2017

We have all heard those nightmare stories; people come back from an incredible holiday, only for things to quickly turn sour when they see their mobile phone bill! They can’t fathom why they have a small fortune to pay. They call up their phone provider to discover that they have left data roaming on throughout the duration of their stay, or that the app they downloaded to find their way around the city has eaten away the data. It can be incredibly frustrating, which is why you need to get smartphone savvy before your next trip:

  • Use Skype or Google Voice when making calls – If you want to stay in touch with family and friends, or you need to take a work call, you should use Google Voice or Skype when making calls. This is a much better alternative than paying the high text and international calling rates. Instead, you can call anybody from around the world for a low rate or free of charge. Of course, it is better to connect to free Wi-Fi than use your cellular data.

  • Find out whether your phone is unlocked – If you have an unlocked GSM smartphone, you will be able to avoid roaming charges altogether. This will enable you to remove your existing SIM card, so you can replace it with a SIM card from a local company in the place you are travelling to. This will be much cheaper! You will probably be shocked by how cheap mobile rates are in other countries.

  • Choose a contract with care – If you are due a mobile phone upgrade soon or you haven’t got a contract at present, you should choose your next contract with care. When looking for a mobile phone contract, most people tend to look at the monthly fee for data, texts, and calls. They fail to consider any extra charges. You should look at international rates and whether there are any packages available for overseas trips.  If you have a bad credit rating, you may think that a mobile phone contract is out of the question. That’s not the case. There are companies like that enable you to get a phone contract even with a poor credit score. They have a number of different bundles and packages available, making it easy for you to find the right one for your situation.

  • Make sure your phone will work in your destination – Last but not least, you need to make sure your mobile phone will actually work in the destination you are visiting. There is nothing worse than arriving and discovering you can’t make any phone calls or access the Internet. There is no guarantee your phone will work when abroad because cell companies use different frequencies and technologies. All you need to do is contact your mobile network company to determine whether your phone will work. Alternatively, you can take a look at your mobile phone manual. It will work in most of the world if it supports ‘quad-band GSM.’
