The Men’s Guide to Practicing Self Care

April 15, 2017

Let’s tell it how it really is; us men can sometimes be guilty of not taking good enough care of ourselves. It’s a busy world out there and at times, finding time for yourself between work and family and social events is difficult at best. Here are just some simple ways to bring a little self-care back into your life.

Spend time in nature

Nature is good for the soul and spending time in it has proven benefits for both your mental and physical wellbeing. In 2009, a study published by Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health concluded that those who spend time in amongst trees express fewer levels of anxiety or depression than those who don’t. Being among plants and vegetation has also been proven to boost the immune system, and exposure to sunlight and vitamin D improves mood, skin and lowers your risk of heart attack!

Practice yoga

Yoga ain’t just for girls! Practicing yoga is a toning and mindful way to spend some time. Not only will you come out of class on a high after savasana at the end, but you will meet new people who wouldn’t usually cross your path, stretch out your joints and limbs and will be dedicating a whole section of your day or week to think about nothing but what your body is doing right in that moment. Yoga is a mind cleanse and will change how you move and view your body. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

Look after your skin

If you’re looking good, you’re feeling good, no? Spending a little time in the morning to look after your skin will leave you feeling confident and fresh before you head out to face the day. It can take time to find the right product for your skin type, but once you do, you’ll never go back. If you’re a man who cares about what he puts in his body, you will likely care about what you put on your skin too. There is a range of products and companies that specialise in natural skin care for men, which means you’ll stay away from putting any nasty chemicals on yourself.

Exercise more

If you dedicate time to exercising you will naturally have more energy and feel better. Remember that factoring more exercise time doesn’t always mean more time in the gym, but instead a cycle or walk to work or a weekend spent out of the city exploring the coast paths. Being fit and healthy is an important way to self-care.

Eat well

Food, glorious food! By putting good, healthy food in your belly, you are setting yourself up for a win. Greens will fill you with iron, and a healthy dose of daily fruit and vegetables will make your skin, gut and hair look and feel great. Eating healthily will stop you feeling sluggish, make you feel on top of the world and give you an energy boost better than one you can get from a sugary drink.
