Nirjhara Bali Review: Is This Waterfall Resort Worth It?

My Nirjhara Bali review, written after three nights in a River Pavilion villa. I cover the villa, the breakfast, the service, the amenities, the daily activities and our morning guided cycle to Tanah Lot temple, plus everything I would want to know before booking.

Some resorts impress you on arrival. Nirjhara kept impressing me every single day.

I spent three nights at Nirjhara in a River Pavilion villa, tucked into the jungle and rice paddies of Tabanan on Bali’s southwest coast. I have stayed at hotels across 58 countries, and it is rare for a resort to get the big things and the small things right at the same time. The breakfast, the service and the amenities here were all exceptional.

What surprised me most was how much there was to do without ever needing to plan anything. The resort runs a daily programme of activities, and one of my favourite memories of the whole trip was the morning guided cycle to Tanah Lot, one of the most famous temples in Bali.

In this Nirjhara Bali review I will share what the River Pavilion is really like, why the breakfast deserves its own section, what I loved, what could be better and the tips I would give a friend before they book.

Nirjhara sits in Banjar Kedungu, near Tanah Lot, surrounded by jungle, rice fields and waterfalls. It is a small boutique resort of around 25 villas and suites, which is a big part of why it feels so personal.

First Impressions

The name Nirjhara comes from the Sanskrit word for waterfall, and you understand why the moment you arrive. Water is everywhere here: cascades running through the grounds, the river below the villas and an infinity pool that looks out over a waterfall and the jungle.

The design is contemporary but rooted in Bali, with natural materials, artisanal furniture and artwork from emerging Indonesian artists. Nothing feels flashy. It simply feels calm, and after a busy stretch of travel that was exactly what I needed.

Our River Pavilion Villa

We stayed in the River Pavilion, a one bedroom villa set in its own private garden with a large deck overlooking the forest.

Inside there is a king size bed and a living area with custom made furnishings, beautiful fabrics and original artworks. It feels like a private home in the jungle rather than a hotel room, and it was the kind of space that made it very easy to slow down.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was one of my favourite parts of the villa. There are his and hers vanities, a large bathtub, an indoor rain shower, an outdoor soaking tub and a tropical outdoor shower. Showering outside surrounded by greenery is one of those simple Bali luxuries I never get tired of.

The Deck

The private deck has an outdoor dining and lounging area, and it is where I spent a lot of my downtime. It is the perfect spot for a slow coffee with the sound of the river below.

One thing to know: the River Pavilion does not have its own pool. If a private pool matters to you, look at the River Pool Pavilion or the Jungle Pool Pavilion instead. With the main infinity pool and the waterfalls on site, I honestly did not miss it.

The Breakfast at Nirjhara

I have to give the breakfast its own section, because it was exceptional.

Breakfast is served at Ambu, the resort’s restaurant, set in a wooden pavilion overlooking the waterfalls and rice fields. The menu mixes authentic Indonesian flavours with brunch favourites and lighter, health conscious options, so every morning felt different.

Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavour, and the setting makes it hard to rush. Breakfast became one of the moments I looked forward to most each day, especially after our morning cycle.

The resort also says around 90 percent of its products are locally sourced, and you can taste it in how fresh everything is.

The Service

The service at Nirjhara was exceptional from start to finish.

The team was warm, attentive and thoughtful, but never intrusive. We always felt looked after without anyone hovering, and every request was handled with a smile. It is the kind of Balinese hospitality that turns a beautiful hotel into a place you want to come back to.

The Amenities

For a boutique resort, Nirjhara has an impressive range of amenities, and everything we used felt high quality and well looked after.

  • An infinity pool overlooking a waterfall and the jungle
  • The Retreat spa, with massages, facials, botanical scrubs and reflexology
  • Finnish saunas and a reflection pool
  • A waterside yoga shala
  • A fitness centre
  • A private cinema
  • The Pool Bar for cocktails made with local fruits and herbs

The resort also runs without single use plastics and has its own water purification system, which I really appreciated.

Daily Activities at Nirjhara

This is where Nirjhara really stands out. The resort offers a daily programme of complimentary activities, so you can make each day as active or as lazy as you like.

The programme includes yoga and meditation classes, guided bicycle tours through the neighbourhood and movie screenings. The resort can also arrange experiences like surf lessons, cooking classes and horseback riding.

Want to plan a few trips beyond the resort? Here are the top 10 things to do near Nirjhara.

Our Morning Guided Cycle to Tanah Lot

The highlight of our activities was the morning guided cycle to Tanah Lot, the famous sea temple perched on a rock formation just off the coast.

Cycling through the villages and rice paddies of Tabanan in the morning was the perfect way to see a side of Bali you would miss from a car. Having a local guide lead the way meant we could simply enjoy the ride, and arriving at Tanah Lot by bike made the temple feel even more special.

If you only sign up for one activity during your stay, make it this one. Then head back for breakfast, which tastes even better after a morning ride.

Not staying at Nirjhara? You can still see the temple with a guided Tanah Lot sunset tour.

What I Loved Most About Nirjhara

  • The breakfast: varied, fresh and served in one of the best settings in Bali
  • The service: warm, personal and consistently exceptional
  • The River Pavilion: private, peaceful and full of character
  • The amenities: waterfall, the infinity pool, the spa and the cinema
  • The daily activities: especially the morning cycle to Tanah Lot & Yoga

What Could Be Better?

After three nights, there was very little I would change, but there are a few things worth knowing before you book.

Nirjhara is a peaceful retreat in the countryside, not a hotel in the middle of Canggu or Ubud. If you want to walk out of your hotel into bars and shops, this is not that kind of stay. You will need a driver for most trips further afield.

The drive from the airport can also take a while depending on Bali traffic, so I would plan your arrival around that rather than squeezing it into a tight schedule.

Who Is Nirjhara Best For?

  • Couples looking for a romantic jungle escape
  • Wellness focused travellers
  • Anyone who wants a quieter side of Bali
  • Travellers who love nature, waterfalls and rice paddies
  • People who want activities included without having to plan them
  • Anyone celebrating a special occasion

How Long Should You Stay at Nirjhara?

Three nights gave us time to enjoy the villa, try the activities and properly relax. If you want to do more of the daily programme or spend more time at the spa, I would stay four or five nights.

Nirjhara also works beautifully as a slower stop before or after a few nights in Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud.

My Nirjhara Tips

1. Check the activity schedule on arrival

The daily programme changes, so ask what is on as soon as you check in and plan your days around the activities you want.

2. Book the morning cycle to Tanah Lot

It was our favourite experience of the stay and the best way to see the local area.

3. Take your time at breakfast

Do not treat it as a quick stop before heading out. It is one of the best parts of staying here.

4. Choose your villa based on what matters to you

The River Pavilion is perfect if you want a big deck and an outdoor bathroom. Choose a pool villa if a private pool is a must.

5. Leave time to do nothing

Some of my best moments here were simply sitting on the deck listening to the river.

Top 10 Things to Do Near Nirjhara

Nirjhara is a brilliant base for exploring west Bali. These are the experiences I would book around a stay here, from temples just down the road to day trips into the highlands.

1. Watch the sunset at Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot is around 15 minutes from Nirjhara, and the sea temple is at its most dramatic as the sun drops behind it. Arrive an hour before sunset to find a good spot on the rocks.

2. Visit Taman Ayun Temple

The royal water temple at Mengwi is around 30 minutes away and is one of the most elegant temples in Bali, with tiered shrines surrounded by a moat. It pairs perfectly with Tanah Lot in the same afternoon.

3. Explore the Jatiluwih rice terraces

The UNESCO listed terraces of Jatiluwih are in the same regency as Nirjhara and feel far quieter than Tegallalang. Go early in the morning when the light is soft and the air is cool.

4. See Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

The famous lake temple sits in the cool highlands of Bedugul, around an hour and a half north. The shrines appear to float on Lake Beratan, especially on a still morning.

5. Trek to the Munduk waterfalls

If you love waterfalls as much as Nirjhara’s name suggests, the jungle treks around Munduk lead to some of the most beautiful falls in north Bali, plus views over the twin lakes.

6. Take a surf lesson in Canggu

Kedungu beach is right next to Nirjhara and is popular with surfers, while Canggu is around 30 minutes down the coast and has gentler breaks for beginners.

7. Watch the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu

The Kecak performance on the cliffs at Uluwatu Temple is one of the most memorable evenings in Bali. Allow around an hour and a half each way from Nirjhara.

8. Spend a day in Ubud

Ubud is around an hour and a half away and works well as a day trip. Combine the Sacred Monkey Forest, the rice terraces and the art villages without needing to move hotels.

9. Join a Balinese cooking class

After the breakfast at Nirjhara, you will want to learn a few Balinese dishes yourself. This class starts with a harvest on an organic farm before you cook a full Balinese meal.

10. Hike Mount Batur for sunrise

It is an early start from Tabanan, with pickups in the middle of the night, but watching the sun rise over the caldera from the summit of Mount Batur is unforgettable.

Is Nirjhara Bali Worth It?

Yes, absolutely.

Nirjhara is one of those resorts where everything works together: the setting, the villa, the food, the service and the activities. The breakfast, the service and the amenities were all exceptional, and the morning cycle to Tanah Lot gave our stay a sense of place that a lot of luxury hotels miss.

If you want a peaceful, beautifully designed escape in Bali with plenty to do on your own terms, I would recommend it without hesitation.
