Hotel Quelle Review 2026: Is This Stunning Dolomites Spa Resort Worth It?

This is my honest Hotel Quelle review, written after three nights at Hotel Quelle Nature Spa Resort in the Gsies Valley, South Tyrol, in the last week of October 2026. I chose it to celebrate my birthday, and it turned out to be one of the most relaxing stays I have had in the Dolomites.

Below I cover the rooms, the rooftop Timeless Sky Spa, the huge wellness garden, the food, the service, my best tips and the top things to do nearby. If you are looking for a five star spa resort in the Dolomites where you can switch off completely, here is everything you need to know before you book.

First Impressions

The drive up the Gsies Valley in late October was beautiful, with golden larches, old wooden farms and the mountains closing in around you. The road almost ends at the hotel, and that is exactly the point. It feels peaceful from the moment you arrive.

Quelle means spring in German, and the hotel grew from the local spring water that the Steinmair family has used for generations. It started as a small inn with seven rooms in 1950 and is still family run today. Our first impression was how big the hotel is, yet it still feels warm and personal, with mountain style decoration, natural wood and cosy corners everywhere you look.

My Room

We stayed in the Junior Suite, and it was perfect for a birthday trip. The highlight is the round bed, which instantly makes the room feel special, and the outdoor terrace with its own private jacuzzi. Soaking in the hot tub with the mountain air around you is the best way to start or end the day.

Every room has its own style, and some suites come with a private sauna and whirlpool, or even a private rooftop spa terrace in the Sky Loft and Spa Suite. If you are celebrating something special, a suite with your own wellness area is worth the upgrade.

The Timeless Sky Spa

The rooftop Timeless Sky Spa opened in 2023 and is reserved for adults, so it stays calm all day. The highlight is the heated rooftop infinity pool looking straight out over the valley and the mountains.

  • Rooftop infinity pool with mountain views
  • The Mountain Fire hot sauna
  • A bio sauna and an infrared sauna
  • Indoor and outdoor relaxation rooms, one with a fireplace
  • The Cloud 7 bar for drinks and smoothies

This was my favourite part of the whole hotel. Swimming in the warm rooftop pool outdoors, with the mountains all around and the cool autumn air on your face, is something I will remember for a long time.

The Nature Spa and Wellness Garden

Downstairs, the Nature Spa connects to a 5,000 m² wellness garden, which is one of the things that makes Hotel Quelle so special. There is a natural bathing pond fed by the spring, a Kneipp path, a river that runs right through the property with its own waterfall, and plenty of loungers to relax between saunas.

  • An outdoor infinity pool
  • A snow sauna to cool down between hot sessions
  • A salt water grotto and steam baths
  • Daily sauna infusions and aroma rituals
  • The Beauty and Vital Lounge for massages and treatments

Don’t miss: The daily sauna infusions. They were brilliant, and one of my favourite experiences of the stay. Check the schedule when you arrive so you can plan your spa time around them.

The Family Spa

Travelling with kids? Hotel Quelle has a separate Family Spa with an indoor pool and dress on saunas, plus a Kids Club, a playroom and a cinema. It means families get plenty to do while the rooftop spa stays quiet for couples.

Dining at Hotel Quelle

Stays come with three quarter board, and the food was one of the highlights of my trip. You will not go hungry here.

Breakfast

Breakfast was amazing, with so many options to choose from. There is a big buffet full of local South Tyrolean products, fresh bread, cakes, fruit and a show kitchen cooking eggs to order. Take your time, because you will want to try a bit of everything.

Lunch and Afternoon Buffet

A light lunch and an afternoon buffet are included, which is perfect after a morning hike or a long spa session.

The Gourmet Dinner

Dinner is a five course gourmet menu every evening, using local, seasonal ingredients, plus a South Tyrolean cheese buffet. Every night was amazing. All the food was delicious and beautifully presented, and it quickly became one of the highlights of each day.

Wine Cellar and Bars

The wine cellar holds around 400 different wines, and there are cosy lounges for a drink after dinner.

Celebrating My Birthday at Hotel Quelle

I spent my birthday at Hotel Quelle, and it was so much fun. When we came down for breakfast, our table had been decorated, and the staff all knew it was my birthday. As soon as I finished eating, they came over with a small cake and a candle. It was such a sweet gesture, and it made the morning feel really special. Later that day we drove to Lago di Braies, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites, and walked around it surrounded by golden autumn larches. It was the perfect birthday.

If you are planning a birthday, anniversary or honeymoon here, let the hotel know when you book. A suite with a private spa and a long evening at dinner make it feel really special.

The Service

The staff were absolutely lovely. Everyone was warm, attentive and happy to help, from reception to the restaurant and the spa team. Everything felt super thought through, and you can tell how much care goes into making every guest feel at home.

What Could Be Better?

To be fair, it is hard to find anything to complain about, because I loved everything here. The only thing to know is that Hotel Quelle is quite a big resort, so if you are looking for a tiny boutique hideaway, it may feel busier than you expect. The spa areas are so spread out, though, that it never felt crowded.

Who Is Hotel Quelle Best For?

Hotel Quelle is perfect for couples, spa lovers and anyone celebrating a special occasion. It also works well for families thanks to the separate Family Spa and Kids Club, and for hikers and cross country skiers who want nature right on the doorstep.

How Long Should You Stay at Hotel Quelle?

Three nights is the minimum to enjoy the spa, the food and a day trip or two. Four or five nights is ideal if you want to slow right down, and the hotel often runs midweek and longer stay offers.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Hotel Quelle?

Late October was magical, with golden larches, sunny days and quiet trails. Summer is best for hiking and biking, while winter brings cross country skiing from the hotel and easy access to Kronplatz. The spa makes it a great choice in any season.

My Hotel Quelle Tips

1. Book the Junior Suite

The round bed and the private terrace jacuzzi make it feel special without going all the way up to the top suites. Perfect for a birthday or a romantic break.

2. Plan your day around the sauna infusions

Check the daily schedule when you arrive so you never miss one.

3. Catch sunset from the rooftop pool

The light over the mountains in the evening is unforgettable.

4. Bring a car

The Gsies Valley is remote, and a car makes day trips to Lago di Braies and the Three Peaks much easier, although your guest pass covers local buses and trains. To navigate the mountain roads, I travel with a Holafly eSIM so I always have data. Read my Holafly eSIM review.

5. Tell them if you are celebrating

The team really go the extra mile for birthdays and anniversaries.

Top 10 Things to Do Near Hotel Quelle

The Gsies Valley is a peaceful base, but some of the most famous sights in the Dolomites are an easy drive away. These are the best things to do near Hotel Quelle, including where I spent my birthday.

1. Spend a day at Lago di Braies

For my birthday we drove to Lago di Braies, and it was the perfect way to celebrate. The emerald green lake sits right below the cliffs of the Seekofel, and in late October the larches around it were glowing gold. The easy walk around the lake takes about an hour, and every corner looks like a postcard.

Tip: Go early in the morning for calm water and fewer people. In peak summer the road to the lake is restricted, so check access and parking rules before you go.

Book a Lake Braies photo shoot with a local photographer

Try yoga and a short hike in the Grünwaldtal near Lago di Braies

2. Hike the Three Peaks of Lavaredo

The loop around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo is one of the most iconic hikes in the Alps, with huge views of the three famous rock towers. It is an easy day trip from the hotel, and a guided tour takes the stress out of the logistics.

3. Hike to the huts in the Gsies Valley

You do not need to go far for great hiking. The Gsies Valley is full of easy to moderate trails leading to traditional mountain huts serving local food, and Hotel Quelle runs guided nature activities on most days of the week.

4. Ride up Kronplatz and visit the Messner Mountain Museum

Take the cable car up Kronplatz for 360 degree views over the Dolomites and the Austrian Alps. At the top, the Messner Mountain Museum Corones, designed by Zaha Hadid, tells the story of traditional mountaineering.

8. Walk around Lago di Dobbiaco

A quieter alternative to Lago di Braies, Lago di Dobbiaco is perfect for an easy walk, with flat paths and beautiful reflections on a still day.

9. Try Törggelen in autumn

In autumn, South Tyrol celebrates Törggelen, a tradition of new wine, roasted chestnuts and hearty local dishes in farmhouse taverns. If you visit in October or November like we did, it is a must.

10. Cross country ski in winter

In winter, the Gsies Valley becomes one of the best cross country skiing areas in South Tyrol, with trails starting right from the hotel and a shuttle to Kronplatz for downhill skiing.
